Minneapolis-based producer Doubt drops his first EP on Don’t Be Afraid (rRoxymore, Semtek) in four years. Bad Plans is an EP of stripped-down house and techno takes that occasionally threaten to break rank and go over to the darkside. In particular ‘Samusex’ and the title track are haunted by unsettling strings and eerie jolts of synth noise in a manner that recalls the set-ups on Blawan’s His He She & She EP. ‘What Is Happening’ combines this sound with a crisp dub-techno style. Opener ‘April’ is the most melodious entry here, but a feeling of unease still permeates the tune’s short keyboard loop.
