Treader Records bosses Ashley Wales and John Coxon unite once more as Spring Heel Jack. This time they are joined by Pulitzer Prize-nominated trumpet player Wadada Leo Smith - a musician who, while studying at Chicago’s AACM, was a contemporary of Anthony Braxton - as well as Steve Noble on drums and Pat Thomas on piano. Together they have cooked up Hackney Road, an evocative free jazz odyssey in six parts. Smith’s commanding trumpet takes centre-stage, spewing with real force and vigour. The rest of the band often come up with music that sits somewhere between Dean Blunt’s The Redeemer and In A Silent Way-era Miles Davis.
