Treader Recordings (Alexis Taylor, J Spaceman) re-release their first ever pressing, Evan Parker’s Evan Parker With Birds. Originally put out in 2004, this record saw the celebrated free-jazz saxophonist pay tribute to his fellow musician Steve Lacy who had passed away in the same year. It is a series of duets, but not as you’d generally understand them. Here we find Parker pushing and pulling with recordings of European birdsong, his spare and conscientious playing style nestling nicely amidst the avian chirruping. There are also other sounds across the record - human breathing, for instance - that lend Evan Parker With Birds a feeling of real intimacy.
