Soulwax decided to do things a little differently when they were approached about airing a BBC Radio One Essential Mix in May 2017. Despite having only just released From Deewee, their eighth album, the Belgian electro group managed to come up with a whole hour of new material for the broadcast. This marked the first time that an Essential Mix had ever been made up of entirely original music, something that might make you uneasy before you remember that you’re in the assured hands of Soulwax. True to form, they come through with twelve pieces of confident club fare on Essential, taking in electro-funk, techno, house and post-punky disco as they go.
