There are plenty of great acts who bear the mark of A Certain Ratio. Everyone from LCD Soundsystem to The Happy Mondays to Golden Teacher owe a debt to the Mancunian post-punks. With Mute now reissuing many of the band’s records, it’s a fine time to (re)acquaint yourself with one of the most striking groups the UK has ever produced. Though Up In Downsville may not come from the group’s 70s/80s heyday (it was released in 1992), it still bubbles with the energy and creativity of much of the band’s best work.
