Riccardo Schiro drops his latest EP via his own Gravity Graffiti imprint. In 2018, it’s rare that you find records that feel like genuinely new blends of styles. However, Schiro’s mixing of Tuareg sounds with an electronica aesthetic drawing on techno, drone and IDM for Dunas feels like something fresh. The six tracks here all take Tuareg’s signature rhythmic and instrumental styles as jumping off points from which to begin their excursions. Crucially, Schiro doesn’t sacrifice the Tuareg music’s rhythmic thrust - the likes of ‘Esoterica’ and ‘Chiaroscuro Explora’ are real bangers, while the less drum-heavy numbers also have a good pulse to them.
