Though This Heat’s Repeat/Metal was issued in 1993 - more than ten years after the Brixton group had called it a day - it is still a vital entry in their discography. Their quasi-third LP contains some work that is pioneering even by This Heat’s standards. One side is taken up by ‘Repeat’, a new version of their famed 1979 number ‘24 Track Loop’. The piece is a heady brew, taking in everything from FM drones to Krautrock to free jazz. Of course, the execution is masterful. Flip the record over and the latent Gamelan influence in ‘Repeat’ is brought to the fore on the chiming ‘Metal’. This remastered version of the album really allows the resonant frequencies to sing across the record.
