The lovely Beats In Space (E Ruscha V, Palmbomen II) presents the second LP from JD Walsh’s Shy Layers project. Both the band and album title aptly set the scene for this pleasant, quixotic album. In the vein of other alt-pop luminaries like tUnE-yArDs and John Wizards, the ten tracks of Midnight Marker are full of pep and energy. The zany quality to cuts like ‘Lover’s Code’ and ‘The Keeper’ recalls the sound and feel of video games like Little Big Planet, but Walsh’s pop sensibility ensures that he is able to contain this spark within the fun, funky structures of electro-pop.
