In her debut LP for Studio Barnhus, Bella Boo comes through with her own version of lo-fi house. This is not to say that Fire has much in common with the moth-eaten jacks of artists like DJ Boring and Ross From Friends. Rather, Bella Boo’s grooves, though generally cleaner-sounding, contain a feeling of intimacy and closeness befitting a record that was largely recorded in bedroom studios. ‘Fire Fire’, for instance, is an achingly wistful jam that comes across like a deep house flip of TOKiMONSTA’s ‘Darkest Dim’. ‘LA Confidential’ and ‘Magnolia’ both wed faraway-sounding synths to pattering drum takes, while ‘Keep Me Warm’ and ‘Is It Rude To Wear My Shades’ are funky jams that also manage to keep something in reserve. New labelmate Axel Boman would be proud.
