Modeselektor's selektion extraordinaire compilation series hits Vol. 04. Freshly powered up by Ninja Tune and loaded to the brim with a who's who of contemporary artists operating within the melting pot of techno, bass, grime and electronica. The edges of each sound and scene are blurred by bangers from Brainwaltzera, Actress, Skee Mask, Lone, Peder Mannerfelt, Lory D, Vatican Shadow and as expected many more A-list names. Modeselektion Vol. 04 is ripe for the extended session pickings for all bedroom, basement and Berghain DJs the world over.

Essentially a guide to the last few years most in-demand producers, Modeselektor's Modeselektion compilation series is both a polite reminder that while the duo are constantly scouring for the hottest new techno, grime and all manner of bass-heavy records coming out each week in the hope of securing more fire for the next 'Selektion comp. While the last two entries in the series have been good, a dream hookup with Ninja Tune has given us the most enjoyable and even more importantly crammed with the most up to the minute freshness that made these compilations so tasty in the first place.

Of the highlights (and there is many) Brainwaltzera's Vodiga instantly stands out first. Leaving behind the fast tempo acid in favour of some grey sky chords and a 2-step drum pattern of which we didn't expect, but hope the mysterious producer explores further in the releases to come. Elsewhere, Actress turns in a rather playful house number that sits nicely between the nostalgic hmm of Hazyville and the more jacking Splazsh. While Peder Mannerfelt's rather chewy Sectional Healing sees him moving even further into Ae abstraction, all the while hitting the sweet spot between laptop-lectro connoisseur and something that on a big system will tear the roof off and re-patch it in all manner of weird ways.

On the techno tip, Modeselektor's Vatican Shadow edit bulks up the tracks sandstorm grind with some tough EQ'ing, before Radio Slave's Introduction recalls the recent Mount Kimbie remix package with its sharp angled quest for big room DJ deployment. For those looking to expand the horizons a little, Fadi Mohem gives the dub chords a good stretch before Skee Mask steals the show with a heavy on the UVB-76 banger. His track shows advancements in sound design that far outweigh its surely tongue in cheek title Lil DB Tool, we can't quite decide is humbling or a boast... but when you have a track that is pretty much the perfect mix of Good Looking jungle and Chain Reaction techno, does it even really matter?

The branches outward that Modeselektion Vol. 04 offers are sure to lead many listeners to new finds and set the tone nicely for those looking to bag some choice club cuts but don’t want to spend hours piling through audio clips and white labels, Modeselektor are once again working the long nights so you don’t have to.
