By hooking up the bass to a audio/midi converter, Squarepusher’s 1999 exploration of drill-heavy IDM and acid techno is a minefield of wild oscillations and polyrhythmic trickery. From the backspin murkiness of Square Rave right through to the digital warfare on Ceephax Mix, the album is thick with overexcited beat patterns and joyriding modular melodies. This was the record where Jenkinson’s unfazed approach to music making came in to its own. Darting from spasmodic acid synth shudders to cool jazz interludes like Yo, Section Sixteen cemented Squarepusher’s status as an artist we should never even attempt to define.
