Back in 1984, Bay Area artist Prophet quietly dropped the private-press LP Right On Time. Over the years, Right On Time’s ebullient Bootsy Collins-meets-Prince flex of future funk has become a highly sought-after piece in collector circles, but we haven’t had much in the way of new music from Prophet. Now Stones Throw have fronted the artist’s new LP, produced by ST favourite Mndsgn. On Wanna Be Your Man, Mndsgn’s mix of bedroom funk and sloping MPC grooves prove a good foil for Prophet, subtly updating the sound of Right On Time for a new generation.
