After a thirty-five year absence, West Coast jazz legends Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids reunited in the early 2010s. It’s proved a fruitful get together, with An Angel Fell representing the third new LP from the group since reforming as well as being their second for new label Strut. The record sees the group balancing the intensely groovy and spiritual jazz that has long been their stock-in-trade with a newly-found interest in parable. Track titles like ‘Soliloquy For Michael Brown’ evince a desire that this record be read in some sense as a comment on the state of things. However, the group never let agendas get in the way of beautiful music. Ackamoor’s desire to draw new depths from his saxophone - see the modal workout ‘Message To My People’ - is a particular joy.
