Montreal-based singer, songwriter and general musical whizz Tess Roby drops her debut LP via Italians Do It Better (Chromatics, Farah). While some of the instrumentation and vocal melodies reference the label’s classic Italo-Disco/synth-pop template, the scope of Roby’s music extends far beyond this. A classically trained singer, she uses the synthesiser and keyboard sounds on this record as a bed from which to build her quirky, quietly innovative tracks. They are also pregnant with feeling - Beacon is intended as a homage to Roby’s late father. The thoughtful r ‘n’ b of Jessy Lanza and mid-period Wild Beasts comes to mind.
