Founded in 1982 primarily as a jazz and improvised music magazine, from the late 80s on The Wire expanded its coverage to cover the whole terrain of underground music: hiphop, jungle, world musics, modern classical, noise, electronic music and beyond.
A pioneering force in underground music journalism, the magazine has championed some of the most exciting sounds on the planet with regular contributions from renowned writers such as Biba Kopf, Derek Walmsley, Frances Morgan, Val Wilmer, Rob Young, Clive Bell, Emily Bick, David Keenan, Chal Ravens, Greg Tate, Nina Power, David Toop, Joseph Stannard, Simon Reynolds and many more.
In recent times The Wire's covers have featured artists as diverse and wide ranging as Shirley Collins, Gaika, Julia Holter, Dean Blunt, Mica Levi, Actress, Holly Herndon, Flying Lotus, Matana Roberts and Oneohtrix Point Never.
