A selection of photos taken by London-based photographer Laura Lewis in Japan that twins Gold Panda’s Good Luck And Do Your Best album. Taken on a joint trip to Japan in 2014, the photographs capture the mood of the country’s suburban areas, conveying Lewis’ fascination with the hard-working demeanour of their inhabitants. This is reflected in the title, which they derived from an encounter with a taxi driver in Hiroshima giving them the parting farewell of “good luck and do your best”; a rough translation of the Japanese phrase “ganbatte, kudasai”. The subtly undersaturated colour scheme of the images expresses Lewis’ perception of the locals’ modest mentality, and thus compliments the evocative sounds of Gold Panda’s third album – which saw him take a more conceptual approach to producing.
