2 Essays describing the parallel journeys of the photographer and the underground rave scene written by musicologist and journalist Caroline Stedman.

2019 is proving to be a great year for coffee table rave books. After May saw the release of Hardcore Soul - a collaboration between Gabber Eleganza and Ewan Spencer that featured Spencer’s beautiful photographs of Northern Soul and hardcore gabber events - we now get a second edition of Molly Macindoe’s chronicle Out Of Order.

Out Of Order features photos snapped at 77 free parties across Europe that were held between 1997 and 2006. Macindoe’s journey takes her from industrial units somewhere deep in London to fields way out in Eastern Europe. With free parties often unfairly portrayed by mainstream outlets as being characterised by unruliness and hedonism, Macindoe attempts to redress the balance here by focussing on the people, scenes and stories behind the sub-culture. As such, her images are full of the love and life that you only get when an artist feels a kinship with the community they are documenting.

The second edition of Out Of Order has been redesigned by the people at Ditto Press. A new foreword from Macindoe’s fellow photographer Tom Hunter - himself a prominent chronicler of squat culture - is included, as are 70 photographs which didn’t make it into Out Of Order’s first run.

Molly Macindoe’s Out Of Order is both a love-letter to her people and a vital chronicle of an important era of dance music culture. With both squatters rights and non-commercial rave scenes at threat across the world for all manner of reasons, books like Out Of Order make a case for the defence.
