Since launching in 2007 the Brooklyn-based label Sacred Bones has established itself as one of the most vital voices in the global musical underground. Early releases from artists such as Zola Jesus and Moon Duo helped put Sacred Bones on the map. The imprint has gone from strength to strength ever since, swelling to a size where it now boasts the likes of David Lynch and John Carpenter on its books. Throughout these years of growth Sacred Bones has never strayed from its commitment to challenging, boundary-pushing, brilliant music.

There is often a darkness that skulks in the shadows of every Sacred Bones release. From The Men’s blistering noise-punk to Dean Hurley’s alien electronics, Thou’s monolithic metal to The Soft Moon’s doom-laden sonatas, Sacred Bones releases tend to be black-hearted and Gothic. They’re often pretty darn loud, too - Blanck Mass’s extraordinary new LP 'Animated Violence Mild' being the latest in a long line of system-blowers to bear the Sacred Bones seal of approval.

As well as serving up plenty of quality new material the imprint has also given us a fair few reissues. When taken together, the albums that Sacred Bones have re-released provide us with some intriguing context - it’s easy to see the influence of Psychic TV and Julee Cruise on the label’s new generation, but something like Mort Garson’s nature-tronics epic Mother Earth’s 'Plantasia' is a delightfully curious outlier.
