    If Kannon was a “piercing bright light” in Sunn O)))’s dark discography, their eighth solo album Life Metal introduced all of the colours between black and white, expanding the band’s visual and musical spectrum. Their first LP in four years is fittingly titled, as Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson channel... well, a life of metal. Across a quartet of tracks that span more than an hour the group take their colossal drones into a space that is beatific, troubled, overwhelming, and transcendent all at once.

    Recorded in single takes with analogue equipment, this is the most true to life album that Sunn O))) had recorded thus far. Help comes from artists who take the band’s sound to an even deeper and further place than usual: composer extraordinaire Hildur Guðnadóttir purring nihilist Aztec poetry among the powerfully life affirming shreds of ‘Between Sleipnir’s Breaths’, Anthony Pateras’s bright pipe organ winds and Tim Midyett’s (of Silkworm and Bottomless Pit) twinkling crotales as the birth of new stars in the churning nebula of ‘Troubled Air’.

    Amid intriguing and lurching shifts in harmony, oscillating rumbles, and sweet screeches of feedback, Life Metal constructs an epic that reaches beyond the gloom of what Sunn O))) might have explored before. Ripping tongues of fire roar as the duo rip through fast paced sequences on ‘Novae’, guitar taking reedy tones on one side while shivering with spectral silver on the other. Everything breaks halfway through as a guttural string solo amasses resonating frequencies, snaking through the quaking soundscape.

    With Life Metal, Sunn O))) once again gave us an LP that redefines what metal can be.
