Releases from Ed and Tom Russell have been comparatively scant since their debut Overmono album Good Lies dropped in 2023, consisting mostly of a handful of collaborative singles that made audiences berserk across multiple world tours. Three years worth of live electricity accumulated in grounded studio sessions in Spain and Iceland, a contrast between extroversion and isolation that would soon manifest as their fiercely awaited second album Pure Devotion.

Tracks like ‘Slowmotion’ and ‘Mialon’ capture the kind of out of nowhere slapshot energy that the Arla EPs cultivated, igniting the brothers’ collaborative career a decade ago. Percussive details and signal blips ghost around organic two step rhythms, filtered through pop and R&B vocal samples contorted alongside warbling synth textures, a fusion between dancefloor accessibility and synth weirdness that makes them such a hot pick for festivals worldwide.

It’s no mistake this album was built largely through testing sounds out on willing crowds, as Overmono intensify both the punch and the atmosphere of their music. The dark, silky, simple bassline pulses of ‘Lockup’ glue together a shimmering anthemic sample flip, plucky synths and dizzying filter sweep swirls, and a slow siren scrub, disparate layers engineered to collide in the club. Epic yet hazy cuts like ‘Even Angels Ghost’ feel like staring into the club lights for just a little too long and seeing blurry ghost images following every beat, brittle with puffs of noise in some places and labouring heavily with pingponging acid stabs in others.

In ten years, Overmono have shown nothing but Pure Devotion to their craft, laying out all the evidence on their second album.
