Hong Kong born and raised Scott Young’s recent EP Ket City bears sonic anchors in many places all at once. A culmination of the various genres he has moved through before on labels such as Opal Tapes and Born Free, realised across five strident tracks. Be it the dilapidated house of ‘Social Climber Guide’, the flitting techno of ‘Drum Orgies’ or the Blade Runner-esque synthscape of ‘Pad Jacuzzi’ - Young’s idiosyncratic sound is like none other. Here we see him study murky mutant hip hop and decade decayed dancehall across 40 minutes featuring Blazer Sound System’s recent offbeat industrial riddims, Mosca’s reggaeton reworking of Boa and the convulsive sound design of Yves De Mey.
