Top 10 Compilations & Reissues of the Year 2019

It’s been a great year for archive material this year. Here we have a list of lost, unreleased and sought after releases that have surfaced throughout 2019.

Stereolab have released a total of 7 reissues this year from the Duophonic catalogue; each remastered with extended, never before heard cuts. It was a tough call, but our pick of the bunch has to be Emperor Tomato Ketchup, the bands seminal fourth record that best defines their sound in the public consciousness.

Mort Garson’s pioneering Plantasia LP was reissued by Sacred Bones. The Secret Life Of Plants, a 1973 book by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, had sold in its millions in the U.S.A, and as a result more homes than ever were awash with greenery. Seeing as one of the claims made in the book was that plants enjoyed music (we’ll let you know about that one) it was only a matter of time before an album came on the market that catered as much to flora and fauna as to green-fingered bipeds.

Light In The Attic released a compilation of ambient music or as the title Kankyō Ongaku directly translates to: ‘environmental music’ featuring the likes of Satoshi Ashikawa, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Haruomi Hosono and Yellow Magic Orchestra. Brian and Roger Eno’s groundbreaking work with Daniel Lanois: Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks was also finally reissued, fittingly alongside the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing.

Louis Moholo featuring Evan Parker, Radu Malfatti and Kenny Wheeler’s highly sought after Spirits Rejoice! LP was reissued by OTOroku. We also had the innovative and highly influential Francis John Tovey aka Fad Gadget’s finest work compiled by Mute Records on limited silver vinyl.

The mysterious, elusive, undisclosed genius Brainwaltzera’s debut EP was reissued by Emotional Response at long last. Elecktroids Kilohertz EP was reissued with a bonus cut Digital Warlock that didn’t make the original 95’ pressing & finally we have a double CD set of Tunes 2011-2019 by Burial; making it plain just how profound an impact he has had on the sound of modern electronic music.
