Kwes makes music that is in love with life. Not in a big, demonstrative way but in a quiet noticing way. In a treasuring of details way. Born Kwesi Sey in the London borough of Lewisham, music as an expression of love was central to Kwes’ upbringing: “I remember on Friday nights my mum and dad used to banter over my dad turning the music up too loud because my mum was trying to watch Coronation Street. He’d be playing jazz records. Then the following morning mum would be playing Mariah Carey out of the tape-deck really loudly. They used to playfully argue,” he smiles. “It was quite a gorgeous thing to watch, thinking about it now.”

Observations of love shape his long-awaited debut album ‘ilp’: the enduring love between his grandparents, the innocence of overheard conversations, and his own reflections on his feelings for loved ones. ‘Long-awaited’ is no hype thing, either. Kwes is an artist that people have had their ears keenly tuned to for more than a minute now: he was demo-ing tunes with a teenage The xx when he was barely out of his teens himself. Over the past handful of years, in-between his own releases, he’s worked with artists that most young musicians could only dream of, including Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn, and Micachu - not to mention been sampled by Kanye West. A wholly disparate group that Kwes navigates with ease.
