On Henry Cowell - 'The Banshee':
"One of the strongest influences on my new album. The piano as an endless sound source rather than just a musical instrument. Almost a hundred years old and still sounding so fresh and open-minded."
One of the best remixes of the last few years from one of my all time heroes. At first, it seems quite basic but it has a subtle depth that sucks you in and reveals itself as time goes on. A modern classic in my eyes / ears
On 'Wax Apple':
"One of the more experimental tracks from my album and the one I like to listen to when I want to remind myself of my time spent producing the album. From tweaking old BBC Radiophonic gear in a studio outside Manchester to editing and mixing it in London this tracks sums up the album and what I wanted to achieve with it."
Basinski is someone I always reach for when I need a moment of contemplation and seeing him in London for the first time last year was something I'll always remember. There is a meditative calm to a lot of his music that you don't hear so deeply in much other ambient music.
On 'Il Mio Tormento':
"Biosphere takes on classical and opera in this slight anomaly from his back catalogue. The full release is quite short and settles on one mood fairly quickly and does not deviate from it, but like the Basinski release above this is the kind of thing I reach for after a long weekend travelling or a long day in the studio."
On 'Convenience Trap pt. 4':
"The latest release from Surgeon who is an artist that has been a clear favourite of mine for many years. He never stops trying new techniques which means his back catalogue is both large and diverse. This is my favourite track from his new EP, but as usual with Surgeon the whole EP works as a cohesive whole rather than a collection of random tracks."
On 'Spectral':
"One of the seminal albums of my youth. It has moved with me from city to city and apartment to apartment. It's not ambient (in the strictest sense) but it's not really techno either, just a collection of low BPM dubbed out acid grooves. It is definitely of its time, but it is also timeless to me."
On 'Imaginary Landscape No. 3':
"A John Cage classic performed really well. Cage's writing as well as his music is something that I have really dived into recently. Like Ligeti his attitude towards music making is as important as the actual music he made. I don't like every project he worked on but that always gives me more respect for a musician and makes me love the work I do enjoy even more."
