    Broadcast – Berberian Sound Studio

Italian seventies exploitation cinema by way of the reading area of berkshire england. well, sort of. broadcast had relocated to hungerford by the time they were doing this, and genius filmmaker peter strickland comes from reading of course.

Louis and Bebe Barron – Forbidden Planet - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

When i was a kid in early seventies berkshire, without realising it, like a lot of people i was getting a rudimentary education in elements of early-ish electronic music courtesy of the bbc radiophonic workshop music turning up in kids tv, and also films like this being on the box.

Compared to what was on the box this is more what could be called "the real stuff" i suppose. more pure sound experiment. but then is the original doctor who theme actually any less advanced or pioneering? oh, i dunno.

    Roedelius – Works (1968-2005)

Another pioneer and life-time advocate, like conrad schnitzler above. overall his life's work is probably less brutal, though he held his own no problem with mr schnitzler when they were together in kluster of course. there's a lot of musical territory here but maybe what it shows is there's a theme of the beauty of sound running through mr roedelius' work (going back to what i was saying above).

Tom Dissevelt – Fantasy in Orbit

I suppose you could call this electronica? in intent this is pretty much exotica, a trip around (or rather over) the world, but done with purely electronic sounds. it's not all abstract electronics, mostly it's pretty tuneful. i heard this back in the late eighties and immediately it reminded me in parts of some of the early human league and john foxx stuff i'd been into as a teen circa 1980 onwards.

I can just about remember hearing the autobahn single (as a bbc children's drama theme tune?!?), and can's i want more as a kid. i first knowingly heard krautrock in the early to mid 80's though, first it was kraftwerk's doppelalbum, then it was can. wow.

Throbbing Gristle – The Second Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle

And at the same time i first heard tg. and it was all downhill from there... actually i still have this record, pretty much the only industrial thing i've ended up keeping. it still sounds right here in the present, right in your face, whenever i play it. very much alive. which might be considered a bit ironic. where do you go after this?

Some of the darkness of tg here, but many other things too. firstly with loop, and then with the more abstract, more electronicy and less rocky, but still done with guitars, main, robert hampson has probably been far more of an influence on me than i've ever fully realised. or ever said. so this is an attempt to correct that here.

Another one that sounds bang up to date. back when my mother used to shout up the stairs "turn that racket down, it sounds like road drills going on up there", more likely it was s.p.k. or something; but when i got this in 1985 or so i finally had the perfect answer to that one with the first minute or so of the track negativland. there's much more than found sounds going on here though of course...

Jessica Bailiff – At the Down-Turned Jagged Rim of the Sky

Jessica has pretty much been my best friend of the last 20 years or so, and has helped keep me on the straight and narrow through some difficult times. this is her most recent record, and probably my favourite.
