Top 10 Albums of the Year 2017

2017 was a momentous year for music within our Bleep world, and with our top 10 albums we have compiled what we consider to be the most important releases from across the board.

While the top spot is taken with the razor-sharp electronica of Jlin's Black Origami, Lee Gamble landed on Hyperdub pushing the boundaries of ambient jungle forward, while Brainwaltzera's update on the classic Braindance sound topped the acid-electronic revival by a mile. With new age receiving a massive resurgence in 2017, the most notable releases by far were from Visible Cloaks mystical reaching Reassemblage, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's influence exploring transitions of youth within The Kid and Alessandro Cortini's AVANTI presenting emotionally charged trip into the misty realms of nostalgia. Each album shone a light on a different aspect of this freshly realised sound.

2017 also heralded the much-anticipated arrival of contemporary R&B icon Kelela's debut album Take Me Apart, an incredibly powerful album of soaring songcraft and experimental electronics delivered with a soulful edge. While Forest Swords turned in his greatest album to date with Compassion, splitting between the ecstasy and melancholy of his earlier recordings, his Compassion offered a journey through the nightland edges of his sound world. A journey perfectly complimented by Blanck Mass' brilliant album of brainfreeze techno and angle grinder electronics that was World Eater. While a special dedication goes out to Photay whose Onism packed in the year's tightest selection of ear worms designed to move your mind.

    Jlin – Black Origami

For us, 2017 belonged outright to Jlin, no other artist's music and influence resonated anywhere near as strongly for us and within underground, electronic music as a whole.

From a cover feature in The Wire magazine, collaborations with William Basinski and commissioned soundtrack work for acclaimed choreographer Wayne McGregor. Jlin's profile rose into new areas outside of the more traditional 'club music' scenes some may try and pigeonhole her within. Her second album Black Origami was the year's crowning achievement. Not only has it personified her unique stance within electronic music but also delivered 2017's most striking, fwd thinking record bar none.

    Brainwaltzera – Poly-ana

For us, the sound of 2017 belonged to the resurgence of braindance and electronica, and the record that stood out the tallest within this microclimate for us was undoubtedly Brainwaltzera's melancholic electronica and head-squashing acid album Poly-Ana. Taking the classic acid sound and rebuilding from a fresh arsenal with an up to the minute update of the outermost edged plugin selections, and space-age studio synth weapons, Poly-ana proved why everyone from Analogical Force to AFX has been favouriting Brainwaltzera's tracks. A truly outstanding record from an endlessly morphing scene.

    Blanck Mass – World Eater

Blanck Mass' World Eater gave 2017 some serious bite. Splicing the noise heavy DNA of Benjamin John Power's group Fuck Buttons with the shape-shifting sludge of his previous solo album Dumb Flesh, we can't think of a more fitting title than World Eater for an album that landed with such physical force and form. From brainfreeze ambient techno to operatic toxic sludge, World Eater is 2017's best example of angle grinder electronics for the ages.

    Alessandro Cortini – AVANTI

By far our favourite escape into blissful ambience that 2017 gave us was Alessandro Cortini's AVANTI. Leaving behind the sleep-deprived electronics of his previous albums on Important and Hospital Productions, AVANTI finds Alessandro Cortini delving into the sort of nostalgia for moments romanticised or misremembered that has made BoC such an important part of our daily listening habits. Making AVANTI by far 2017's most powerful and emotionally charged recording.

    Forest Swords – Compassion

Forest Swords returned in 2017 with Compassion, an album that was split between the ecstasy and melancholy of his earlier recordings. Yet what made it such an important record was how far into the late night dusk-fallen allure we were led. The music dragged out the edge of the night sounds that were previously only hinted at on the distant horizon of his sound world, and in doing so made Compassion one of the most searching, yet explorative records of the year.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – The Kid

One of the most tranquil experiences of 2017 stemmed from Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's incredible new age offering The Kid. Expanding on the ideas her previous album EARS played out, The Kid brilliantly encapsulated a freshly found sense of imagined wonder that is explored within thirteen tracks that perfectly transmit the awe, mysticism, and innocence of youth and its influence.

The jaw-dropping collision of soaring songcraft and experimental electronics has made Take Me Apart not only one of 2017's greatest albums, but surely one of the most important within electronic music this year as a whole.

    Lee Gamble – Mnestic Pressure

Lee Gamble's Hyperdub debut Mnestic Pressure built upon the dreamscape rave remembrance of his PAN output, yet further explored the hyperactive dynamics of jungle, whilst carving deeper into the tech-heavy dubplate culture from which his sound and Hyperdub's originate. 2017 saw Lee Gamble pushing his sound, us and everything around hard into the future.

    Photay – Onism

While it may have slipped under the radar of most, Photay's album Onism was one of the most rewound records to grace the Bleep office stereo in 2017. Having caught our attention a few years back with his debut 12", Onism made good in the following years with drip-fed tracks of his unique disco-leaning hip-hop hustle. Onism is an album packed with ear-worms expertly designed to make you move no matter your state of mind.

    Visible Cloaks – Reassemblage

While many artists in 2017 looked to the diamond-encrusted sound of new age electronica for influence, Visible Cloaks looked further afield to the relatively unexplored (at the time) sound of Japanese artists such as Hiroshi Yoshimura for inspiration. Reassemblage stands as an important relic of the Western undergrounds cross over into the musical - and at times mystical - landscapes of the Far East.
